City celebrates nearly 40 years of being carbon-free

The City of Morganton prides itself on many accomplishments and accolades, but there is one that many may not know about.

Since 1985, the City of Morganton has been using clean energy. Approximately 99.6% of the power that the City receive is carbon free. In other words, there is no carbon footprint and no carbon emissions are released into the air causing pollution.

The Electric Department recently took part in a customer survey through ElectriCities of NC. The survey results showed that a low percentage of customers even knew we were carbon-free.

Electrical Department Director Brooks Kirby, said “In recent years, we have received requests from industries who are concerned about our carbon footprint of the energy received by the City. We are proud to tell them that we took steps decades ago to eliminate carbon emissions.”
