National Line Workers Appreciation Day!

Happy National Line Worker Appreciation Day! (April 18th)  - The City of Morganton has owned and operated a Municipal electric distribution system since 1899. What began as a system for street lights only, has grown into a reliable source of electricity for our residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Electric system reliability is the main goal of our workforce. Over the last ten years the Morganton electric system has provided power to the public at a reliability rating of 99.99%.

Tree contact is the biggest problem, and is the cause for one-third of the power outages in Morganton. The next most frequent cause is squirrels, which account for approximately 28%.

We currently employ 12 line workers that carry out the installation, maintenance, and repair on the 220 miles of the electric system.

Each lineman is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of emergency. There is also a two man crew scheduled for outage response every night.

Outages that occur during the day are typically repaired in less than 30 minutes. After hour outages are usually repaired in less than one hour.

We are so thankful for the dedication and hard work of our City of Morganton line workers. There are many things we take for granted like having power in our homes. Thank you for keeping our lights on, so that we can focus on the many other things in life.
