The City of Morganton is looking for a detail-oriented, organized, technically sound person to become our next accounting assistant. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and remain flexible enough to accept additional tasks that support the department with a friendly and positive attitude!

Work involves processing a variety of accounting transactions, with a primary focus on accounts payable, payroll, and miscellaneous accounts receivable. Other responsibilities include daily bank deposit preparation, state and federal payroll/accounts payable reporting/compliance, and involvement in the annual audit.  While the nature of the work requires a high degree of accuracy on data entry and the majority of tasks are performed independently, the successful candidate will be able to tactfully and pleasantly interact with coworkers and the public as needed.  Strong written and oral communication skills are a must!

A two-year degree in accounting or equivalent experience, as well as an understanding of accounting practices and principles, and a proficiency data entry skills using Microsoft Word and Excel are required. Strong preference will be given to those with work experience in the areas of accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger account reconciliations.  Starting hourly rate is   $17.34 (Equivalent annual salary $36,059 – will be eligible for up to a 5% increase after successfully completing a six-month probationary period).
