The City of Morganton is a vibrant and energized city located in the foothills of North Carolina with scenic rural landscapes and abundant outdoor adventure opportunities which makes us “Nature’s Playground”.  Morganton is also home to over 400 acres of spectacular municipals parks including aquatics, baseball fields, a soccer complex and an expanding greenway system.  The recreation department is held in high esteem with historically strong support from the community.  The city is seeking a team oriented, community focused, well-organized leader to assist the Director of Recreation in continuing to enhance and enrich the recreation facilities and opportunities for our citizens. 

The Assistant Recreation Director will be responsible for efficient oversight and support of operations, planning and maintenance of the Parks and Recreation Department. This position will have supervision over maintenance, programming and athletic programs as backup supervisor in the Director’s absence.

Work involves supervising individuals in various capacities along with oversight of other activities, events, special interest camps, clinics, youth tournaments.Position is responsible for assisting with development and supervision of tournaments, including developing and delegating supervisory responsibilities to other employees to ensure all operational details are addressed and events run smoothly. Work is managerial and supervisory in nature and is performed with a significant degree of independence and discretionary judgment as they relate to programs and services and application of policy and procedures.  Support and assist Director in capital planning, operating budget, and special programs.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to function as part of the “City Team”, as well as leadership skills to be decisive enough to make good independent decisions. Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration or closely related degree and considerable experience in recreation, maintenance, programming and athletics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Target salary hiring range $49,500 - $53,000 depending on experience.    Apply online or at City Hall - Human Resources Department, 305 East Union Street, Suite A-100, Morganton, NC.
