The City of Morganton is looking for a high-energy, outgoing individual to be the Main Street Manager for Downtown Morganton. An award-winning Main Street Community since 1983.  Supported by the Mayor, Council, City personnel, downtown businesses, property owners, and the community. The Manager oversees a 38-block district, with 240 residences, a Fairfield Inn & Suites Hotel, and multiple quality retail stores.  Morganton is a town of 18,000 people known for being progressive through quality projects like the recently completed Courthouse Square.  Upcoming is a 2-block streetscape project, an infill housing project, and an aggressive restaurant recruitment program.  The Morganton Main Street program produces 20+ quality events and a large fall festival. The Manager oversees one employee and a vast number of volunteers. 

The Main Street Program is a part of the Department of Cultural & Creative Development that also encompasses CoMMA Performing Arts Center and Morganton Community House. All three work together closely guided by Sharon Jablonski, a veteran Main Street Manager, and Mary Means Award recipient!

This position performs a wide variety of professional, promotional and consultative work to manage and administer the Main Street business development program for the City, including:

  • Consulting with local officials, business, and community leaders to promote and market the City’s downtown business district, furthering economic development in the City through the facilitation of business expansion, retention, and attraction of new business;
  • Planning, coordinating, and implementing special events to promote the downtown, including the annual Historic Morganton Festival, a two-day event of crafts, food, and live music;
  • Developing, consolidating, and presenting data, statistics and publications to show the economic potential of the City; identification of prospective businesses; and maintaining proper records, reports and public information for the Main Street program.

Work requires considerable planning, detailed problem solving, and timely execution of work.  The successful candidate will display the ability to exercise independent judgment, self-motivation, outstanding organizational skills, and strong interpersonal skills to build healthy relationships.   

Education requirements is the knowledge typically found in post-secondary education across fields related to the responsibilities, such as Business, Marketing, Urban Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Public Relations, Public Administration, Planning or related field of study. Five (5) or more years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Pay range is $53,275 - $79,912; with starting salary commiserate with experience.  Open until the right person is found, with first review of applications on Monday, October 16 & interviews to begin soon after.  City of Morganton is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
