We are the Morganton Department of Public Safety, located in the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.  We are the police and fire department protecting the citizens of the City of Morganton.  Our department has 100 employees, which includes 59 sworn Officers, and we are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team.  We are seeking those already law enforcement certified as well as those who are not.  Presently we are accepting applications for paid sponsorship to Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) where we pay for all costs associated with BLET as well as provide a salary while attending training.  Once on patrol our new Officers will experience all the aspects of traditional law enforcement with each day bringing new and different encounters where you can gain valuable experience and in-turn give back to the community we serve. 

We’re looking for individuals that are able to exercise judgment independently in a variety of situations and be able to communicate effectively with both citizens and co-workers, verbally and written, and be able to accurately prepare detailed reports of actions taken.  Our hiring process is similar to that of most Law Enforcement agencies and it consists of the following steps; interview board, background, polygraph, physical/drug test, firearms qualifying, fitness assessment and psychological screening.  A few other requirements are:

• Graduation from high school; an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice is preferred not required

• Valid North Carolina Drivers’ License (or ability to obtain by date of hire)

• Able to become a certified Firefighter as required by NC Fire Commission Standards

We offer a competitive starting pay of $37,862, which will increase to $46,021 after successful completion of BLET and a 6-month probationary period.  Our Public Safety Officers can anticipate earning a minimum of $48,100 annually due to paid holidays and paid in-service training.  Furthermore, we offer a great benefits package (see below), specialized assignments and the opportunity to begin a career that’s rewarding to both you and our city.
