Case Update on Traffic Crash with Fatalities from July 20, 2022

On December 5, 2022, Brayton Dustin Nowatka of Morganton was charged with N.C.G.S 20-141.4(a2), Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle, in the traffic crash that occurred on July 20, 2022. Nowatka was given a court date of February 20, 2023.

On July 20, 2022, at 2:37 p.m., Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of E Fleming Dr and E Union St for a crash with serious injuries. Investigators and Traffic Reconstruction units responded to the location of the collision to assist with the investigation. The passenger of one vehicle involved, Gloria Hogan, was flown to CMC main for her injuries. Hogan later passed away from injuries due to the crash. This case is still under investigation to determine if any charges will be issued. The Burke County EMS assisted the Morganton Department of Public Safety.
