Failure to Flee Fire Results in Charges

On March 21, 2023 at 8:38AM, Morganton Department of Public Safety received a smoke investigation call coming from behind 112E Morganton Heights Blvd (Shoe Show).  Upon officer’s arrival, a large cloud of black smoke was showing and appeared to be coming from the woods behind this address.  Further investigation showed that a homeless camp site was fully involved and actively burning.  There were multiple camp sites around this location that were in close proximity to the fire.  Units on scene evacuated the citizens who were still inside the neighboring tents.  While evacuating, two subjects in a neighboring tent refused to leave after being asked multiple times.  Morganton Fire Units were able to extinguish the fire and ensured everyone was out.  While attempting to ascertain the information from the two citizens who refused to leave Eric Eugene Holland, DOB 08/24/1963 was arrested.  Holland refused to give officers his information for reporting purposes before resisting arrest.  Holland was arrested and charged for RDO and Possession of Methamphetamine.  Holland received a bond for $4,999.01 and is scheduled to appear for court on March 23, 2023 at 9:00AM
