Subject charged with multiple counts of possession of weapon of mass destruction

On May 24, 2023, North Carolina Probation contacted Morganton Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division regarding suspicious firearms located during a search. Probation Officers were conducting a search of Joshua Phillip Steffey, 41, at 319 Morehead St, Morganton, NC, when the weapons were located. Morganton Department of Public Safety Investigators responded and determined the two firearms had been modified. Steffey was charged with two counts N.C.G.S 14-288.8, possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Steffey is being held at the Burke County Jail under a $25,000.00 secure bond and has an initial court appearance on May 25, 2023. The case is still under investigation, and additional charges may be pending.
