Impaired Driver charged with DWI after Collision with Tree

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, Morganton Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched to the area of Independence Blvd in reference to an intoxicated driver.  The caller stated she had been following the vehicle for some time and the vehicle had almost hit several cars.  Officers were in close proximity to intercept the driver but were advised the vehicle had ran a red light and crashed into a tree at the intersection of Independence Blvd and N Green St. 

The officers arrived within seconds and located a silver Honda Accord with heavy front end damage.  The driver, identified as Brian Edward Taylor, 41, of Caldwell County, was medically evaluated by Burke County EMS and refused treatment. 

Taylor was then screened for impairment and subsequently charged with the following charges:

  • DWI
  • Damage to Property
  • Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia
  • Careless and Reckless
  • Failure to Stop at Steady Red Light

Taylor was held under a Custody Release.  A first appearance in court is scheduled for May 10, 2024, in Burke County.
