Man Arrested after Leaving Checking Station in Morganton

On March 21, 2024 at approximately 10:00pm, Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety were conducting a motor vehicle checking station on Burkemont Avenue when a van pulling a food trailer came through the checking station. The driver, Darryl Lewis Sampson Jr, 38, of Morganton, was instructed to pull his vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway for a registration violation. Sampson proceeded through the checking station and refused to stop his vehicle as commanded by officers on scene. Officers pursued Sampson down US 64 where they were able to catch up to him and conduct a vehicle stop near Causby Drive. Sampson was instructed to exit the vehicle in which he refused numerous times. Sampson was later taken into custody without further incident and charged with the following offenses:

 

  • Resist, Delay, Obstruct a Public Officer
  • Expired Registration

 

Sampson received a $500 secured bond and a first court appearance of May 30, 2024.
